My first daughter was born via C-section after a failed induction and spent her first days of life in the NICU. Being separated was extremely difficult but I stayed in a hotel close by to come and feed her. Luckily she was an awesome breastfeeder right off the hop, latched perfectly right away. I had a great supply and she was exclusively breastfed until she self weaned at 20 months.
I was also able to donate a lot of milk to BC Women's Milk bank which was so amazing! I loved every second of breastfeeding my first and I knew I wanted to help others so I became an IBCLC.
Then I had my second daughter...and I saw the other painful side of breastfeeding. Tongue tie, severe colic (screamed 18 hours a day for 4 months straight), silent reflux, milk & soy protein intolerance, poor weight gain, low supply and the list goes on. I had to work really hard to keep her breastfeeding and with a lot of effort and perseverance she was able to exclusively breastfeed, I built back my supply and even went on to donate milk again.
While difficult at the time, I am grateful that I had two very different breastfeeding experiences as this has made me more empathic and has shaped the way I practice lactation support.
